Strange Perfume by Wilson Loria
Strange Perfume is a coming of age story that involves sexuality and ethnicity. The story focuses on the life of Nelson, a young Cuban man who moves to the U.S. at the beginning of the Cuban revolution. In New York, Nelson starts a new life and most importantly finds out about his own sexuality. Having lost a lover and having had a few other love encounters throughout the years, Nelson flies to Brazil where he meets Carlos. Crazy about opera, Nelson’s life is an opera itself.
Although he is stricken with AIDS, Nelson never loses his sense of humor. As his life is coming to an end, Nelson says he is departing his without bitterness, since he did whatever he wanted, leading a full, happy and satisfying life.
